According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), 2021 was a record-breaking year for robot sales across the continent \u2013 and globally.\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>In this blog, we\u2019ll look at the figures in detail, and compare Europe with the rest of the world across industries.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>A strong recovery in Europe<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a style=\"text-decoration: none; border-bottom: 2px solid #a7be38;\" href=\"https:\/\/ifr.org\/ifr-press-releases\/news\/robot-sales-surge-in-europe-asia-and-the-americas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to the IFR<\/a>, year-on-year robot sales in Europe increased by 15% in 2021 to reach 78,000 units. That puts the market ahead of its previous peak in 2018 before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The automotive industry saw the highest number of robot installations, but the biggest driver of growth across the continent was in metal and machinery with a 50% increase in demand for industrial robots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sales of robots in Europe by industry:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Automotive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19,300 units (+|- 0%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metal and machinery <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15,500 units (+ 50%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastics and chemical <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7,700 units (+ 30%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PALpack\u2019s Managing Director, Dave Wood, said: \u201cThese impressive sales figures are an indication that the Covid-19 slump is behind us, and we can look forward to continued growth in this area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe rapid uptake in robotics globally is yet another reminder that if UK manufacturers want to stay competitive, they can\u2019t afford to be complacent when it comes to adopting new technology,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=\u201dWhy using robots in manufacturing could help your business\u201d link=\u201durl:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.palpack.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fwhy-use-robots-in-manufacturing%2F|target:_blank\u201d][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Robotics figures globally<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A similar success story for robotics was seen across the rest of the world in 2021 with the biggest demand in Asia\/Australia. Unit sales reached 354,500 there, which represents a 33% increase on the previous year.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asia remains the world\u2019s largest user of robots with a 73% market share globally.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the Americas, 49,400 units were sold \u2013 a 27% increase on the previous year \u2013 but only the second best year for the region after a bumper twelve months in 2018 when they installed 55,200 units.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regional breakdown of sales:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asia\/Australia <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">354,500<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 78,000\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americas <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 49,400<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What this global picture shows us is that Europe, while behind Asia, is still forging ahead when it comes to embracing automation.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_btn title=\u201dContact PALpack for free advice\u201d link=\u201durl:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.palpack.co.uk%2Fcontact-us%2F|title:Contact%20Us\u201d][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<h2>Industry-related robot sales<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth in robot sales was seen across all industries globally, but some areas outperformed others. Sales in the electronics industry stepped up by 21%, overtaking the automotive industry as the biggest consumer of robots.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other industries shaped up well too:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Metal and machinery <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">57,000 units (+38%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plastics and chemical\u00a0 <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22,500 units (+21%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food and beverages <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 15,300 units (+24%)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This diversification of customers partly explains why the robotics industry is doing so well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Robotics sales \u2013 the takeaway<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s striking about these figures from the IFR is not how many units have been sold by industry or region but the overall steep increase in the adoption of new technology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s the clearest sign yet that manufacturers are meeting the increase in consumer demand by finding new ways to boost output without relying on labour.
